Garage Doors
Capping garage doors require the weatherstripping to be removed and re-installed. If the weatherstrip is deteriorated or rusted it will need to be replaced. I provide a high quality steel weatherstrip.
If have ordered a new garage door and would like me to do the capping, the garage door company will do the weatherstrip. Usually I work with garage door companies to install the capping in the days leading up to the door install. I remove and take away the old weatherstrip, leaving the the frame ready for the new door and weatherstrip.
Vinyl Weatherstrip -
Rarely, but on occasion a garage door company will install weatherstrip made of vinyl. Or you may currently have vinyl weatherstrip that is in good shape and would like me to reinstall after I do my capping. I DO NOT recommend this. First, if the weatherstrip is already installed, removing often results in the weatherstrip cracking, regardless of the care taken on removing. Second, vinyl does not have the strength to handle the movement in the aluminum capping as it expands and contracts. I have seen the capping ripple because of the vinyl. A homeowner who would like to use vinyl would do so at his own risk. That being said, if you are getting a quote for a new garage door, I suggest asking the company if they use vinyl weatherstrip. If they do, in my opinion, they may not be interested in giving the best quality products.
(Yes, vinyl does not rust. However, all weatherstrip tends to last around 10 years depending on care and environmental factors. In my opinion, If you are installing capping, get the strong stuff)
