Attic temperature needs to be as close to outside as possible. Soffit ventilation combined with good shingle ventilation will allow for this. This protects your shingles from ice damming.  If your old house has wooden soffits, when I install the new aluminum soffit I cut out the old wood. Some contractors will just go over the old wood, meaning the attic will not be getting proper venting. Other contractors will drill 4” holes. While better than nothing, aluminum soffit is designed to have enough holes to vent the attic. If the air needs to go through the new soffit and then find the holes in the wood, the attic will still be not getting sufficient venting. By cutting out the old wooden soffit under the eaves, your attic will be vented properly.  I use the same four panel soffit (4 panels every 16”) that everyone else does. If you would like to have three panel soffit which is much thicker (and in my opinion looks better) I can pre-order it for you for an extra charge.
